Science

I have a confession to make. We have never actually completed an entire year's worth of Science. I feel that it is most important in the beginning to get a solid foundation down on the 3R's. You know, Reading, Riting, and Rithmatic. So my main focus has been on those 3 subjects. With all the changes that went on in our life last year moving twice, having a baby, cleaning etc.., Science just fell low on the priority list. (It's not a requirement at this grade in my state by the way.)
That being said we have throughout the normal course of our lives read a ton of books that are Science related. I guess we've been doing the unschooled version of Science.

This year, I wanted to do a more formal study. So, after much consideration we chose 106 days of creation from Simply Charlotte Mason. http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/106-days-creation-studies/

Coupled with Considering God's Creation. http://www.eagleswingsed.com/products/cgc.html

This study is great for a first year. It includes a basic overview of all the different aspects of creation. We are making a creation notebook to document our progress.
One of our recent lessons was on shadows. We were in the Day 1 Light. So, we went outside observed the shadows and talked about the reason for them.
Then we drew our own shadow outlines out of chalk on different parts of the driveway.
Well, most of us did. Timothy did not want to lay down on the driveway so his feet were traced.James insisted his be close to the edge of the garage because he figured there was a better chance his outline would stay in the shadow all day.
At various times of the day we went outside to observe the movement of the sun and its effects on the outline. We observed where the shadows moved throughout the day around the yard as well.
The children had a lot of fun with this lesson and we are all looking forward to what the rest of the year holds.

When, Gregory got home he observed the shadows too. :Giggle: His first question was, "Did something happen to Caleb I'm not aware of today?"
He never knows what he is going to come home to. :)
