Deer Watching

The deer have been coming around much more frequently in the last month or so. There is a Momma deer and her two young fawns that seem to come into our yard daily. They are really cute to watch. A week ago we were doing our Science lesson on Creation. We looked up and there the deer were standing very close to our window. We took a moment to observe them up close. Not surprisingly, when we later drew our pictures to put in our creation notebooks a deer made it on one of the pages.

Timothy especially has taken a fondness to the deer since we have moved here. He often checks a puppet deer out of the library to play with. He requested a stuffed deer for his birthday and received one from his Aunt. He loves that deer and it has now become one of his cherished bedtime buddies.
Sometimes the boys like to try to get as close as they can to the deer without having them bound off. They will inch closer and closer trying to sneak up to them. At some point, James decided if he were to pretend to be a deer they might accept him faster.
One day in particular, I really got a kick out of them. They saw the deer in the yard, ran outside and split up. James ran around the house one way and Timothy the other. They had a plan. I could feel it. Then James began making "deer noises" and putting his antlers up to be a deer. He crept up closer and closer Indian style. If the deer looked up at him he would stop and put up his antlers. To his great disappointment they finally ran off. He was just sure he was on to something. I love that they make me laugh!
So, tonight when I saw the deer in our backyard I let them know. They ran to the backdoor and immediately all three put up their antlers and why shouldn't they? Grown men do funny things when they are cheering for their favorite team. Looking at deer isn't much different.
Even Elizabeth wanted to show us the deer. :)

(Forgive my camera. I have been playing with it to figure it out and had to readjust after taking these photos. )
