Playing with Aperture Setting

I have always loved taking photos.  When I was about 8 my Dad gave me my first camera for Christmas.  From that time forward I became the family photographer.  My dad was a single dad at the time raising myself and my brother so most of the photos from that time period are ones I took.  I loved it though I never officially took a class or had training.  I wish I had of taken time to learn more back then.  Fast forward several years to digital photography.  I took lots of photos and even began to scrapbook them and document.  As I began to do more with documenting my photos I noticed the red eye in many of them.  I wanted to do something to get rid of that.  I was intimidated by big, fancy cameras though that had big lenses.  I knew nothing about the auto settings.  I thought you had to have experience to use those cameras.  About four years ago I finally upgraded my camera to an SLR because I read that was the best way to get rid of the red eye.  I am so glad I did!
Now, I am ready to take that next step of not using the auto setting.  I took a photo class at our local university and began playing around with the aperture settings.  It is quite obvious I am just starting my learning process with these photos, but for a beginner I thought they were decent.
Going to have to figure out what I did on this one.  I think it is too soft.

Do you enjoy taking photos?
