Grandma was a strong influence in my life. Outside my father, she was the person I spent the most time with as a child. In the summer when Daddy would go to work my brother and I went to our Grandparent's house. When Grandaddy died she lived with us until a few years before her death. I was blessed to have Grandparents that loved me.
My Grandma was born August 31, 1919. She had Polio when she was a child so she always had difficulty walking. By the time I came along she walked very infrequently. Most of my memories are of her sitting in a certain brown chair. The good thing about a Grandma who only sits is that she has time to talk to you. She loved to tell stories about her childhood or those of her children when they were young. She had 7 children so she had tons of stories she could draw from. Grandma loved to laugh. She told jokes often and always wanted to hear one. Now that I think about it that is probably where my Daddy got his love of jokes from.
Grandma was a great cook. I was in awe of the fact that she could peel an apple from top to bottom and the peeling would be in one long strip. I still can't do that to this day! I have early memories of making cookies with her in her kitchen. She enjoyed collected recipes. She would put them in a recipe box. We spent hours looking through her various recipes and talking about them. I always admired that she knew just how to tweak a recipe to make it taste good. Once I got old enough to cook I would choose a recipe and then take it to her. She would read it and then tell me if it was a good one and if I should make any alterations.
I have so many more memories of time spent with Grandma. She was a key player in my life. She made me feel special and invested herself in me.
Grandparents have a very special part of a child's life. Our own children are blessed to have good, Godly grandparents. Gregory and I encourage our children to have relationships with them. We both realize the wonderful benefit it is to their lives.
