Homeschooling and life
Whew! I have got to catch my breath. It has been a busy month.
The beginning of the month we attended a homeschool convention. We spent 3 days pouring over booths and curriculum and listening to speakers encourage us in teaching and training our children.
One of the interesting things that tends to stick out to me is that homeschooling is so much more than just educating your child. Again and again I am encouraged to build relationships with my children. It is so much more than just imparting knowledge. When you home-educate your children you are living a lifestyle of enjoying learning together. That can take place in so many different ways. Yes, it definitely takes place at the table with books, but it also takes place as you are driving down the street. It can take place at the Doctor's office or at the park as you discover a new kind of tree you haven't previously been able to name. Sometimes in the busyness of my day, I can forget that life is about living with your children and enjoying it together. When I was a child I enjoyed learning, but now that I am an adult learning has taken on a whole new meaning.
For example, this month we discussed bees and their importance of being on earth. Then I encouraged my children to stop and watch the bees as they flitter from flower to flower. What a delight it has been to see my children run up to me and say, "Mom, we've been watching the bees!" On another day God allowed a bee to get stuck in between the screen and the window of our classroom window. Right there we got to observe that bee up close and personal without having to be concerned about it touching us. What a joy! (Of course, the kids were concerned about it being stuck and later we had to go try to free it. God took care of that too and it got out on its own.) I know these will be memories that I will always cherish.
Okay, so I didn't have pictures of my children looking at the bees so I assumed you would enjoy these of the boys catching the grasshoppers. We are all about the bugs around here!
