The children made butter while learning about cows, milking and how it is made. They then took their butter to the next station and learned about corn. They used the butter to put on cornbread and ate it. Did you know paint and glue have corn in them? They took corn kernels and ground them into corn flour. Caleb thought he was supposed to taste that as well. You can tell by the look on his face how much he enjoyed it.
The next station was bales of hay to romp and play on. Big hit! Then they learned about cotton. Where it came from and how it is used. This is a photo of the instructor showing how they weighed the cotton before the cotton gin was invented.
Next, they learned about the water cycle and pumped the water pumps to race the ducks.
Another goal of the farm is to give the everyone room to run and have fun. So, they have fun slides made out of oversized tubes and swings. A new experience for us was the corn box. The children played in raw corn kernels. Elizabeth took her turn examining the corn very carefully as well while Mommy kept a careful eye that it would not end up in her mouth.
We saw pigs race and observed other farm animals such as goats, horses, and chickens.
I love this shot below. While we were watching the animals the rooster crowed. Timothy was standing right in front of the rooster when he crowed. There was a huge smile and a little glimmer in his eye. I knew something mischievous working in his brain. When I asked him if he liked the rooster he said, "I want that rooster so he can wake Daddy up in the mornings." (Ha Ha the little rascal!)Afterwards, we rode the tractor to the corn maze, walked through it and then the children all chose a pumpkin. They are all so proud of having their own pumpkin. Caleb chose the biggest one he could carry.
Elizabeth was so happy with hers. She looked at it like she couldn't believe she was being allowed to hold a pumpkin.
James was very careful about which pumpkin he chose. He would pick one up look at it and then carefully put it back and choose another until he found his perfect pumpkin. I'm still not sure what his criteria was, but he was very happy with the one he chose.
Timothy was happy with his pumpkin, but I think he was even happier about the corn cob he found on the ground while we were walking through the corn maze.
Mommy's favorite part of going to the farm is the photo opportunities. I didn't get as good of ones as I had hoped, but isn't this the cutest wagon!
It was a lovely day to be at the farm and we are so glad we were able to go. Our only regret was that Gregory wasn't able to go this year.
